The Simmons Cup was presented to the Club in 1929 by a then Vice-President, Harry Simmons. It was donated to fill a gap to cover the Club’s first trial open to other clubs. This award is a simple goblet-shape with handles and a silver hallmark plus one or two dents, which isn’t bad after about 43 years of service [now more than double that!].
Before his retirement to Mudeford, near Christchurch, Harry Simmons kept a garage in the old fire-station at the top of Sidcup Hill. It was for motorcycles only and the fire-water was kept in cans as, of course, there were no pumps then. The cup and its shield-spangled plinth are now valued at £93 [maybe it’s time to get it revalued!].
The Simmons Cup Trial was the first ‘open’ run by the Sidcup Club in 1929. It has been run most years since except the years of World War 2. In 2015, the name of the trial was changed to “The Dick Dickenson Trial for the Simmons Cup”. Dick Dickenson was the Sidcup Club’s Trials Secretary for fourteen years, and he was the Clerk of the Course for the Simmons Cup Trial for many years.
